iPod's For Dummies

(Brought to you by www.tucsonfashionista )

iPods are little small portable music players, that play your music! (For the latest iPod video player, please page down to the bottom of this page.) With the advent of technology in the music arena, Apple computers devised a clever way to use a computer file format to shrink the size of a music recording.. In fact they are really mini little computers that read files. They have a "hard-drive" (the cupboard of the computer) that reads/plays the data file, where the data file is now music. The most common music compressed file is the MP3 format.

You connect the iPod to your computer via a USB cable, install iTunes (Apples music library software) pop in some of  the CDs you already own, iTunes makes it easy to transfer your favorite songs and albums. Just pop a CD into your Mac or PC and click the Import button. You can import music in a variety of formats, such as MP3 for sound quality indistinguishable from a CD at about half the original file size. And with USB 2.0  you can transfer the music from an entire CD to iPod in just 5 seconds or less.

You can store on your iPod about 250 songs per GB (Assuming your music collection is not made up of extended 15 min versions of ABBA, Madonna & the like!), and there are always great deals on E-Bay for some of the older/smaller units.

Accessories Are A Must

JBL  "On Stage".... Apple iPod Docking Sound Station, On Stage is a compact high performance sound system. Connected to your iPod, iPod mini, MP3 player or other music source, the On Stage will provide clean, powerful sound. Great for dorm rooms, or bedrooms!.... The death of the Boom Box is just around the corner!! These units retail for about $160, but can be found by wholesalers on E-bay for $90 !

Then there is the ultimate way to accessorize...that's practical too! For all of the iPod product line there are several companies jumping on the band wagon, in making multi colored iPod covers or "skins".

Now you can express yourself & your iPod!! Great looking and highly protective, should you drop your unit! These "skins" are about $6-10 each, and are a pretty smart investment!

If your are "on the go" with your iPod you'll find many useful accessories

The 3 in 1 car kit for iPods

Very convenient to use while listening to your favorite music's off your iPod while resting on this holder that also functions as power charger through the car's cigarette lighter adapter. The kit also includes an FM radio transmitter that allows you to "tune-in" an open radio frequency, that receives your iPod music!

The unit also has a built in adjustable holder for all iPods with dock connector (iPod 3G, 4G, iPod Mini, iPod Photo, iPod Special Edition and all the iPod versions from HP). There are many other FM model springing up all over E-Bay.

Then of course there's the armband/s! Again many colors/styles are available. These little units are becoming a fashion statement unto themselves!!

Are you a "podder" yet?

Loading YOUR Music

All the iPod units come with Apple's own iTune software, which lets you copy/select all your fav's from your CD collection to import on to your PC, and then onto your iPod! It is very easy and cool. You can even play your music now from your PC, from your own iTune
 library.

Video iPod's

iPod Video ($300 - 30GB, $400 - 60GB). iPods have dominated the player market for good reasons, like their simple, functional design and easy to use controls. The latest generation 30 and 60 gigabyte iPod Video players ($300 and $400, respectively) are the leviathans of their product line, with enough memory for even the greediest listeners, earning high marks for bringing still and motion pictures onto a two-and-a-half inch screen, while shrinking slimmer than the iPod Video's 20 gig predecessor.

At Apple's iTunes online music store, owners can download music videos and clips from ABC and Disney shows like "Lost," while knowledgeable-enough users can export their own video to the device using an editing program like Quicktime Pro. We have been using a program from Cucusoft to export both TV & DVD video to convert to the required MPEG format.  You can download the software from  www.cucusoft.com  for less than $30's! The iPod video also provides a line-in recorder for external microphones, so you can record your music if your collection ever grows stale. The battery can last for about 15 hours – but you can expect video length to be shorter.
